Ipswich: A Celebration of Light, Land, and Sea, by Andrew Borsari
Photographs

One of the oldest communities in the United States, Ipswich is famous for the extraordinary number of First Period (seventeenth-century) dwellings preserved here. But it also offers one of the most varied landscapes in New England, with rivers running down through forest to marshland and the pounding sea. Borsari celebrates the lush natural majesty of Ipswich as he sees it, with a collection of images that quiet the mind and lift the heart.

Watching the Wharf, by June Caley
Historical
Signed Copies

Because so much of its past is still present, New England has a unique charm. A lot has been written
about such places as Plimoth Plantation, Boston, and Salem. Ipswich, however, is a little-known treasure on the coast thirty miles north of Boston. Settled in 1633 by John Winthrop, Jr., son of Governor Winthrop, it became an intellectual and cultural center second only to Boston.

Today, the population of Ipswich is 13,000. Two-laned roads wind past more pre-1725 homes than in any other town in the country. A river rushes through stone-arched bridges, one of which is Choate Bridge, the oldest stone-arch bridge in North America. After zig-zagging through town and around Ring Bolt Rock at the Town Wharf, the Ipswich River flows out through the famous Ipswich clam flats to the Atlantic Ocean. The sand bar, which at one time caused shipwrecks at the mouth of the river, now forms a world-class beach of sparkling sand five miles long. Much of the past is still present.

Watching the Wharf, the Story of a New England Town is a five chapter overview of the history of Ipswich in Massachusetts Bay Colony, with focus on the Town Wharf. In about 6000 words, 380 years of tangled historic facts are placed in order in an appealing way. Colorful, realistic watercolor illustrations bring to life the progressive changes in the wharf and town as an Indian village in the wilderness develops into a town of ethnic diversity.

Copies currently on hand are of a limited production run and hand signed by the author.

The Orchard - A Memoir, by Adele Crockett Robertson
Historical

Written by the late Ipswich resident, Kitty Robertson, this story takes place on her family's Argilla Road apple orchard.

The following synopsis appears on the back cover of the Bantam Trade Paperback:

"Discovered by the author's daughter, The Orchard is the extraordinarily poignant and moving memoir of a young woman's single-handed struggle to save her New England farm during the Great Depression. Her father's death left Adele "Kitty" Robertson determined to preserve the small apple orchard that was her scattered family's one remaining link with its past. Leaving behind a secure city job, she returns to her childhood home, far down a country road, with only her Great Dane for company."

"There she pits herself against bone-grinding work and relentless cold, broken machinery and a mountain of debt. But reviving the neglected orchard brings surprising rewards: the glory of spring mornings and the rich scents of autumn, the comic intricacies of bookkeeping, the dramas of well-digging and apple thieves, and the unexpected kindness of neighbors and hired hands. A profoundly inspiring tale of one woman's heroism, The Orchard chronicles the grimness of impoverishment while celebrating the quiet courage and simple goodness than can bloom even in the cruelest of times."
